Strips of curved perforated aluminum come together to create this huge installationby architect Marc Fornes and study
The Very Many branched. The facility, called Under Magnitude, is suspended from the atrium of the Orange County
Convention Center in Orlando, Florida. The tubular branches is composed of bands in hand curved perforated aluminum
joints are riveted. More than 4,600 strips of aluminum, Fornes is referred to as “structural stripes”, form the two–story structure.
Each individual piece is only one millimeter thick, but is bent in such a way that is strong enough to walk. “Each strip
assumes high degrees of curvature individually andhigh degrees of double curvature in accumulation – which represents
an extreme structural rigidity throughout the project”, the study said. The installation of Under Magnitude is the latest in a
series of winding structures created by the study of art and architecture The Very Many and Marc Fornes, who created similar
forms for a Texas Park and the Gallery of art and architecture of New York.
Each project practice of New York and Strasbourg is based on the research of German engineer Frei Otto, architect and his
experiments with soap bubbles. “Otto was determined that a bubble, when he flew up to the size of a room, is structurally more performant than a box,” said the study. “The strength of low magnitude is achieved
by“Intensive curvature”, that is the maximization of the double curvature through the project, while the maximum restriction radaii”, he added.
“The result is a structure that has a much narrower curve with a constant change of direction, and results in a more
structural performance.” The hollow structure is suspended columns in the atrium of the Convention Center, where it is lit or projected by the Windows that surround it. “Every passerby low suspended structure is forging a personal distinction,
since the work provokes comparisons with the recognizableworld, influenced by the experiences and individual associations”,
said the study, which leaves the way open to interpretation “, the study said.
“Taking advantage of, by loosening elements of the world, pushing them out of scale and hybridizing them to the realm of the bizarre, structure
achieves a quality family but mysterious, at the same time friendly and others,” he added. Under Magnitude is based on a previous installation of Marc Fornes and The Very Many in the FRAC Center in
Orleans, France, which also resembles a giant coral. The study has also designed previously a house in Strasbourg, France,
with an inner slide for its younger residents.
